By combining massive amounts of diverse data, scientists from NASA and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have created a beautiful high-resolution model of the Earth’s ocean currents.
The project, called Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO), uses observational data—including ocean surface topography, surface wind stress, temperature, salinity profiles and velocity data—collected between June 2005 and December 2007. By incorporating these data into an M.I.T. model, the result is “realistic descriptions of how ocean circulation evolves over time,” according to the press release. “These model-data syntheses are among the largest computations of their kind ever undertaken.”

Machine translated: “English photographer Vincent Fournier ( Vincent Fournier ) during the last 5 years, removes [let’s say ‘uncovers’ here, okay translation-bot?] everything connected with space exploration.”
This is a beautiful and inspiring set of images dealing with the Russian Space Programme.

This is an expansive, gorgeous, challenging set, and I highly recommend listening to it.

This month’s mix includes three spiky works by Varese, Schoenberg, and Dutilleux. Varese’s Ameriques, written shortly after the composer’s immigration to the States, is an expressionistic depiction of the city, as well as a tribute to eternal intellectual exploration (something he believes America to symbolize). Schoenberg’s prickly Violin Concerto, here rendered masterfully by Hilary Hahn, is a substantial 12-tone work that nevertheless manifests itself as a mutation of Romanticism. Dutilleux’s Metaboles, a 17-minute concerto-for-orchestra in miniature, is characterized by a magical, rhapsodic metamorphosis, from the opening “incantory” mood to the “flamboyant” ending.
This music might not easy listening for some, but definitely worth a try. Do reblog if you enjoyed!

1. Ameriques - Edgard Varese (performed by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Riccardo Chailly conducting)
2-4. Violin Concerto - Arnold Schoenberg (performed by Hilary Hahn with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Esa-Pekka Salonen conducting)
5-9. Metaboles - Henri Dutilleux (performed by l’Orchestre de Paris, Semyon Bychkov conducting)
This is an expansive, gorgeous, challenging set, and I highly recommend listening to it.

This is the designer Hubert Vykukal and his spacesuit, the AX-3. This is an intermediate model AX Series, a collection of NASA space suits that cover the 60 and 70 and were the first to incorporate o-rings rotating technology.
This prototype AX-3 in particular weighs 23 kg, with an operating pressure of 0.5 to 0.7 bar and dates from 1977, the same year the Saturday Night Fever mass popular disco music. And it seems that Hubert Vykukal disco has caught the scent of the moment, as shown in the light plataformón boots, apart from the rounded shapes of the joints, which certainly gave him a modern.
As in the diving suits for deep, round shapes were not arbitrary.  A counter measure to be significant pressure on space, the use of spherical shapes able to better distribute the forces is an engineering solution to Hubert Vykukal began introducing their designs.

Edward Horsford’s high-speed photography freezes the spherical innards of water balloons — just as the balloon skins break open, and just before they splash to the floor. He works at night in his garden in London, using flashes to light the action. Amazingly, he works alone. Water Balloons Without The Balloons : The Picture Show : NPR
